Nitric acid is the inorganic compound with the formula HNO₃. It is a highly corrosive mineral acid. The compound is colorless, but samples tend to acquire a yellow cast over time due to decomposition into oxides of nitrogen. Most commercially available nitric acid has a concentration of 68% in water. When the solution contains more than 86% HNO₃, it is referred to as fuming nitric acid. Depending on the amount of nitrogen dioxide present, fuming nitric acid is further characterized as red fuming nitric acid at concentrations above 86%, or white fuming nitric acid at concentrations above 95%.

ശക്തിയേറിയ ഒരു അമ്ലമാണ് നൈട്രിക് അമ്ലം (പാക്യകാമ്ലം). രാസസമവാക്യം HNO₃. ശുദ്ധ നൈട്രിക് അമ്ലത്തിന് നിറമില്ല. പഴകിയവയ്ക്ക് മഞ്ഞ നിറമുണ്ട്. നൈട്രജൻറെ ഓക്സൈഡുകളാണ് ഇതിന് കാരണം. ശക്തിയേറിയ ഓക്സീകാരീ കൂടിയാണ് നൈട്രിക് അമ്ലം. ലോഹങ്ങൾ, ഓക്സൈഡുകൾ, ഹൈഡ്രോക്സൈഡുകൾ എന്നിവയുമായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ച് നൈട്രിക് ലവണങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാവുന്നു. വളങ്ങൾ, സ്ഫോടകവസ്തുക്കൾ എന്നിവയുടെ നിർമ്മാണത്തിന് നൈട്രിക് അമ്ലം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
